Engineers Making Waves in Aquaculture

Engineers Making Waves in Aquaculture Engineers Making Waves in Aquaculture Engineers Making Waves in AquacultureThe human race is staring down a crisis like nothing it has ever faced before. As the population around the world continues to grow, humanity is faced with increasingly short supplies of food. The United Nations estimates that 815 million out of the 7.6 billion people in the world, or 10 percent, suffered from chronic undernourishment in 2016. While global food production needs to substantially increase to meet this ever-growing demand, we are also running out of places to produce this food. The Earth has already lost a third of its arable land, and climate change will only continue this trend. The answer to these challenges is being found not on land, but under water. Aquaculture, or fish farming, has become viewed as an inexpensive, efficient way to feed the world. Fish varieties grow quickly to maturity, are very lean, and offer other health benefits, including those from Omega-3 fatty oils. At the same time, properly managed production facilities can limit the farms impact on the environment.Seafood is, in many ways, an ideal food source. Its healthy, plentiful, and sustainable. And the market knows it. The industry was worth roughly $176 billion in 2017 and is on track to reach $219 billion by 2022. Thats a five percent compounded annual growth rate.OysterTracker app helps oyster farmers manage their teams, optimize their farm activities, and plan their harvests. Image Oyster TrackerRelated 5 Ways How Digital Farm Technology Is Transforming AgricultureGiven this soaring demand, engineers in many fields are currently working to ensure that aquaculture as an industry is as clean and efficient as possible. This includes remote sensing technology, targeted feed additives, and recirculating water systems that can be built and function on dry land. For example, Prospective Research, a startup out of Massachusetts, is leveraging bacteria to create natural ly occurring replacements for antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals used in aquaculture. Theyre doing this by modulating individual bacteria using signaling molecules that can trick the bacteria into turning on its natural biotics, or defense mechanisms.Maybe in 10 years this technology will be used in humans and maybe in five years in cattle and poultry to replace antibiotic growth promoters, said Dakota Hamill, founder and CEO. But we focused on aquaculture because it was fast growing and is faced with a very large challenge, which is how do you control disease in a population of animals in which governments have completely banned the use of antibiotics? The companys solution has been to create what it calls stim keys, which are in effect chemical listeners that mimic what bacteria and fungi use to communicate in the soil to detect competitors or threats. In response to that signal, theyll turn on their biodefense weapons, which are antibiotic, antifungal, and antiparasitic. As many as 70 percent of the drugs we know today come directly from these bacterial sources, which have been evolving these tools for billions of years. Researchers can access the blueprints to as many as 40 different secondary metabolites just from the bacteria thats found at the bottom of the ocean or in the soil. This is medicine in its most natural form, delivered directly to fish via their feed.Editors Pick Tiny Gyroscope Aims to Improve Wearable, Nano TechnologyFurther up the chain, Osmo Systems is working to address water quality concerns in aquaculture installations by bringing Big Data analytics tools to what has so far been a fairly low-tech industry.Right now, about 70 percent of our farmed fish and shrimp is raised on land in systems that are highly outdated, said Zach Stein, CEO and co-founder. You take the shrimp industry, for example This is a $54 billion a year industry growing at 10 percent per year and its still run like its 1980.Osmos solution has been to develop low-cost , low-maintenance water quality monitoring systems for fish farms that take the guesswork out of day-to-day operations while layering in data gathering functions to help make farms mora efficient and sustainable. We see the key first step as gathering high quality, real-time, high-fidelity data from each pond, Stein said. And that allows you to do a few things. First, you can monitor the water quality to avoid high mortality, catching problems early and then alerting the farmer. Then, the long-term aspect of it is combing this with other data and looking at how the system can be designed to actually function better, get those survival rates up, and improve performance. These goals are the low-hanging fruit, he said, given aquacultures long history of inefficiencies. From a sustainability standpoint, the more animals that make it to harvest, the more sustainableand profitablethe overall system will be.The typical oyster farm has a series of floating cages, each with about six different bags underneath, said Chip Terry, CEO of OysterTracker, a startup in Maine working to bring similar digital tools to the fast-growing oyster farming market. Each of those bags might have 200 market size oysters in it. And youve got a growing cycle that lasts anywhere from a year if youre in Florida to multiple years if youre in PEI or British Columbia. Turn your phone off 30 minutes before bedtime and leave it outside the bedroom. Take a hot bath, change into dedicated pyjamas and drink some water to help you relax.3. How to Make Your Employee Benefit Presentations Fun

How to Make Your Employee Benefit Presentations FunHow to Make Your Employee Benefit Presentations FunEven though Employee Benefits is a great business area to work in, the related topics can seem very dry to people who are forced to sit through onboarding or open enrollment presentations. Why? The majority of benefits presentations deal with statistics, facts, and other figures, which can be too complex for the average employee. This is no fault of the presenter, but when material like this is presented, the whole meeting can quickly become boring, causing people to check out. Live presentations are a critical aspect of regular benefits communication so you might as well learn how to rock them the right way By doing so, you will ensure that employees have a better understanding of the overall benefits package your company is offering and take advantage of as many group benefit options as possible. You want your audience excited about participating in the benefits program. Ready to t ransform your employee benefit presentations from dull to brilliant? Here are some tips for making benefit informational events much more enjoyable. 1 - Use Stellar Visuals You should always have some great visuals ready for your employee benefits presentation. Use PowerPoint or another professional presentation software to create these visuals, which should include high-definition videos and images. Try to limit the use of graphs, pie charts, and flowcharts. unterstellung will only bore and maybe even confuse your employees if too much is thrown at them at once. Include plenty of fun stock imagery, and limit the words that appear on the slides. Remember, you want your audience to listen to your voice and not become overly concerned about whats on the slide. 2 - Make Materials Interactive To keep your audience engaged, be sure to make the presentation interactive. Provide hand-outs so everyone can follow along. The hand-outs can also be used to take notes or write down ques tions. If you only use digital media for the presentation, offer a poll or survey to the audience to keep them interested and involved.Refer employees to a copy of the company policy handbook if they seek more information after the presentation. 3 - Avoid Reading Directly from the Slides If you created the presentation via PowerPoint, it is likely that you have text on those slides. Whatever you do, avoid reading from the slides while presenting. When you read directly from the slides, you will quickly become monotone, which puts people to sleep. Prepare by taking good notes. Speak freely during the presentation, injecting emphasis and excitement into your voice.Make eye contact with the audience, utilize good body language, and dont stand in one spot for the entire presentation. Walk around, engage with your audience, and be attentive to their mood. Keep your conversation natural and show that you are an expert in this area. 4 - Use Appropriate Work Humor There is nothing wrong with using appropriate workplace humor during a benefits presentation. Just make sure it is clean and fun. The humor must be relevant to what you are discussing. You can share a favorite story from your personal work experience that relates to the topic - one that your audience might enjoy or could learn from. For example, recall a humbling event that you later laughed about. Avoid using humor that could potentially offend or that is racially, gender, politically, or religiously biased. Use visuals on your slides to emphasize the humor. 5 - Collaborate with Peers on the Presentation It is sometimes beneficial to collaborate with others (with a peer or another member of your human resources team) on the presentation. Instead of being the lone wolf at the front of the room, ask a colleague to make the presentation with you. Some possible ideas are that you could ask the corporate wellness representative to help you talk about an added perk or include someone from your compa nys retirement fund administrator. This will add a second voice, keeping the audience interested as you take turns presenting information. Prepare extra time when there are two presenters, and be sure to introduce your guest presenter at the start of the meeting. 6 - Provide Short Snippets of Information You need to avoid offering too much or too little information during an employee benefits presentation. You should provide useful information in short snippets as much as possible. When you hit a topic that requires 10 discussion points, try to whittle them down to about 5 points if you can without sacrificing important information. In any benefits communications effort, this will help you get your main points across without overwhelming the listeners. Remember, you can always supplement your presentation with a personal meeting with any of the attendees, email follow-up, or hold a second session that goes into greater detail about a specific benefit. 7 - Always Welcome Que stions at the End At the end of the presentation, welcome questions from the audience. They will likely participate, especially when interested in the topic.Should no one ask a question, have some prepared that you can present and discuss. Limit the question and answer session to between 15 and 20 minutes. Then, provide your contact information, including an email address, so that employees can follow up with more questions or concerns. The tips outlined above should provide guidance. Keep your presentation interesting, fun, and to the point for the biggest impact.

SP Global Corporate Responsibility Commitment S&P Global is committed to promoting a sustainable future as part of their enterprise corporate responsibility commitment. In the video above, S&P Globals partners from the New York Restoration Project and the New York City community talk about the impact S&P Global employee volunteer efforts have had to bring about a greener New York. SPGlobalImpactAre you interested in joining the S&P Global team?If yes, then click here to see all available opportunities at S&P Global and dont forget to press Follow to receive custom job matches, event invitations and more One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harv ard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the wertmiger zuwachs of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list a t $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

What to Do When Youre Burned Out from Working At Home

What to Do When Youre Burned Out from Working At HomeWhat to Do When Youre Burned Out from Working At HomeWhen youve spent most of your career in an office or cubicle working from home binnenseems like a dream come true. You have all the benefits of a steady paycheck and career satisfaction from your job with all of the creature comforts of home, including a zero-hour commute, a wardrobe ranging from yoga pants to pajamas and a stocked kitchen a few steps from your desk. Im one of the lucky ones. For almost three years I enjoyed two work-from-home days per week at a great job, and I now work for myself from a home office all week. But even though my career trajectory was heavily focused on having the freedom to work from home, something surprising happened along the way I got burned out from being on my own all the time. While the first few months or years of working from home are often refreshing and satisfying, over time it can get old. So what are you to do when youre burned out f rom working from home? I have done all of the following.Find a Co-Working Space, Rent an Office or Work at the LibraryAlmost 30 million Americanswork from home at least once per week. Once per week might simply give you added freedom in your schedule. If you work from home full-time, however, a whole week in your house by yourself can get old. As more people work for themselves or work virtually,co-working spacesare popping up in large cities across the country. These workspaces allow individuals from many different backgrounds to mingle, co-create or simply share office space. They are a great way to mix up your routine, get out of the house and interact with other people. If there arent any co-working spaces in your city you could also consider renting a small office space to increase the separation between your home life and your work life. For me, it also helps to treat the local public library or coffee shop as an escape I can go to a few days per week when working at home seem s oppressive. It comes rent-free, and it allows me to have the feeling of returning home from work after a long day. Redecorate and Reorganize Your Home OfficeAt the risk of encouraging you to spend money to solve a problem, a small investment in your home working space can also do wonders for increasing your morale. After all, theres a reason companies invest in office decor. It is to improve employee performance, and the same logic works for your home office. Take some time to consider the organization of your office and the flow of the room, using resources like feng shuito give you creative ideas for desk and chair placement. Then consider investing in paint, office furniture and art that is meaningful to you to make your office a place you go to be inspired and get great work done. This step has been particularly useful to me this month as I redecorate my office. Without realizing it I had filled my office with old, dusty and sometimes broken second-hand furniture and dark pain t simply because I had the items on hand. Within a few days of painting the wall a brighter color and reorganizing the office for a much better flow I find myself much happier to wake up and get started on my weeks work.Change Up the Work in Working From Home You can adjust the work part as well as the home part, too. Its not always about your office take a look at how you spend your time each week and brainstorm creative things you can do to renew your excitement, or simply consider different timing for different activities to get a new perspective. Implementing new routines can have a dramatic impact on your day-to-day energy level. For example, instead of focusing on where youre working, consider the breaks youre taking throughout the day. Once or twice a week drive to a local park to take your daily walk or go out to lunch even though you could prepare lunch at home.If you have control over your schedule in this way, try blocking your weekday work by task. Schedule phone calls f or certain days of the week and dedicate other days of the week for specific tasks so that you have a clear rhythm. Ive also heard of small business owners who make a point of taking Wednesday as a day off each week to embrace the feeling that they have control over their schedule, or they see a movie on a weekday morning just to shake things up. Identify the Real ProblemEveryone is different, so it makes sense that everyone will experience working from home differently. If youre feeling burned out about the thought of working in your home office, try to diagnose the root of the problem. Do you feel claustrophobic in the space you have? You might need a larger room within your home, a co-working space or to rent an office. You can also try out different libraries and places with wifi to find a good away office.Do you feel like you never speak to anyone or that you dont have good relationships? Set aside time each week to network with business contacts from work by phone or Skype to continue to build those relationships even when youre out of the office. Do you feel uninspired to work? Reorganize or redecorate your office with colors and images that energize you. Consider a standing desk, treadmill desk or a laptop so you can work from a couch or chair. Change things up until you have a space that is conducive to good work.Do you feel like youre in a rut? Make creative scheduling choices based on the freedom you have with your job, including running errands early in the day and working later or using your lunch time to see a movie, take a walk at a fun park, or meet with friends. Dont let a temporary setback convince you that working from home is not for you. If youve reached a standstill on your excitement for your home office, use these tips to fall back in love with working from home. If you currently work in an office but youd like to work from home, dont let this list stop you from trying it out. Use these tipsto talk it over with your boss and see if the work you do could translate to working from home.

Drinking more than this amount of juice a day is linked to premature death

Drinking more than this amount of juice a day is linked to premature death Drinking more than this amount of juice a day is linked to premature death Put down the juice box. A new observational study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), says that over-consumption of fruit juice is associated with a 42% increase of premature death. The data within the new report also intimates that while sugar found naturally in 100% fruit juice might not be as deleterious as sugar-sweetened beverages, consumption should be still be limited in children and adults, especially for those wishing to mitigate weight gain. The content in these beverages has the potential to surge insulin resistance in addition to promoting weight gain around the waist. Ultimately,  obesity is the culprit behind the sharp mortality rates occasioned in JAMA’s study,  though the statistics are certainly informed by sugary beverage intake.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! What constitutes as over-consumption?By analyzing death recor ds, and dietary surveys from 13,000 individuals over the age of 45 for roughly six years, researchers determined that individuals that receive 10% or more of their daily calorie intake from sugary beverages increase their risk for premature death by 14%. More specifically, this intake was associated with a 44% risk increase in premature deaths due to coronary heart disease.Collectively, the study reported a 24% premature death increase of any cause associated with each additional 12 ounce serving of fruit juice consumed. Roughly 60% of the participants reviewed were men, and nearly 71% were either obese or overweight.Regarding the recent findings, dietician  Kate Patton stressed to CBS Philly, that portion size is the most salient takeaway here, given that premature death increase begins with habitually consuming more than the recommended amount of any sugar-sweetened drink over time.  Patton, recommends her patients consume no more than four to eight ounces of juice a day. The Ame rican Academy for Pediatrics recommends children between the ages of one and six, limit their fruit juice intake to six ounces a day.Jean A. Welsh, a co-author the new study and an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University in Atlanta, intends to conduct further research to establish a more concrete connection.  Welsh explains, “I’m looking at our results for sugar-sweetened beverages and juices independently, we need to be clear that the risk presented is relative to that present in the lowest consumers of each.”You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

They can help you learn new skills, overcome obstacles, be better about time management, and make you more patient. In other words, go pick up a hobby and maybe consider one of the following.Richard Branson plays chessIn addition to jumping out of planes and speedboating, he also enjoys some tamer activities like chess.  Ã¢€œI think chess may just be the best game in the world,”  he wrote on Virgin’s blog. “It combines the greatest aspects of many different sports - tactics, planning, bravery, and risk-taking - plus you can have a cup of tea and often a stimulating conversation while you play!” Chess is excellen t for brain growth, increasing creativity and preventing Alzheimer’s so you may want to adopt this hobby soon! Peter Thiel also plays chess.Oprah loves to take leisurely bathsWhat does the woman who has everything like to do? Take super leisurely baths in her custom-made tub of course! The tub is made out of marble and onyx and was CARVED TO THE SHAPE OF HER BODY! Now that sounds pretty darn amazing. According to a recent  study  from the Japan Health and Research Center, Tokyo City University and Jichi Medical University there are a number of physical, as well as mental health, benefits from a daily soak in the tub.Sergey Brin flies through the air on the trapezeThe Google founder has a number of adventurous hobbies but the trapeze is one of his favorites because of the intense adrenaline rush.Rachel Zoe loves to bakeThe stylist and fashion designer also loves to be in the kitchen baking.  Ã¢€œI bake anything and everything,” she told PEOPLE. “You name it, I do it. I love it.” Marissa Mayer is also obsessed with baking.Tom Hanks photographs lost itemsIn addition to collecting old typewriters, Tom Hanks also likes to photograph random lost items like gloves or shoes and then post them on Twitter.  Ã¢€œThe absolute best use of worldwide social media, you know?” Hanks said in a video interview with PBS. “Twenty million followers later on they’re still hanging on whatever new kid’s mitten is going to be found somewhere.” The hobby encourages him to think on a more philosophical level it sounds like. “It’s really kind of like a visual haiku of separation, loss, maybe freedom, maybe loneliness in the big city,” he said. “A lost glove looking for its mate, isn’t that just the way of the world? Aren’t we all just lost gloves, looking for our - if we’re a left hand aren’t we looking for our right hand?”Virginia Rommetty golfsThe CEO of IBM has been ranked as one of the most powerful women in the world and also once shot 144. It’s one of those fun things, so of course I want to keep it in my life,” Wade said in an interview. “Maybe someday, I would love to get to dress someone from head to toe. Start with men, and then maybe women! Who knows? I want to do it. I know there are so many steps to get there, but I want to do it.”

3 Reasons Being a Mentor Will Improve Your Career - The Muse

3 Reasons Being a Mentor Will Improve Your Career - The Muse 3 Reasons Being a Mentor Will Improve Your Career The benefits of having a mentor in the office are pretty well-known now. You’ll gain knowledge, contacts, insight into the company culture, a wise and experienced sounding board, someone to recognize your talents, a sense of belonging- the list goes on and on. But, as it turns out, mentoring is not just good for the mentee- it’s actually more of a two-way street than most people realize. (And no, I’m not just talking about those warm fuzzies you get when you help someone out.) The HR department at Sun Microsystems conducted a study showing that mentors were over 20% more likely to receive a pay rise and six times more likely to bag a promotion than those who didn’t take part in a mentoring program. Six times! How is that possible? Let’s take a look: 1. It Makes You a Better Leader As a mentor, you need to be remain objective, keep an open mind, and have the ability to ask really pertinent questions. In addition, you need to be a coach- helping your mentee understand where she’s gone wrong, or why his career’s stalling. And this all has to be done without hurting any feelings or playing the blame game. That’s a balancing act worthy of Cirque du Soleil. Learning how to work with people you don’t have a natural affinity with, demonstrating patience with those in need of support and guidance, and helping people figure out how to best move forward are all trademarks of great leaders. The more you work at it on a one-on-one basis, the more you’ll improve at it in a larger group setting. 2. It Helps You Learn More About Your Company Let’s say you’re the head of finance. You’ve worked your way up, you’re qualified, and you know everything there is to know about the financial dealings of your company. But what do you know what the challenges, the purpose, and the daily workload of other teams? Not much, probably. Well, it’s time to broaden your view. Mentoring can be a very smart way of gaining insight into what goes on in the areas that you’ve never been involved with. We’re not suggesting you launch a covert spy mission- you’re just a smart person gathering information and arming yourself with knowledge that might be useful in the years to come. After all, if you want to move from head of finance to CEO in the next five years, it’s time to start thinking very strategically about where you fit in on the ladder, and being a mentor will not only increase your chances of being promoted (quickly), but it will also shine a light on areas you’ve never had to think about too much before. 3. It Makes You Feel Great Fine, I lied earlier. There are some warm fuzzies involved. To take a newbie by the hand and lead him or her to success might be one of the most amazing things you can do with your time at work. Especially considering that most people will spend approximately 90,000 hours at the office within their lifetime. (I know. Horrifying.) So it’s vital to your own well-being that you try to make the most of your time there. And, believe it or not, watching someone else accomplish his or her goals can feel just as amazing as watching yourself do it. Don’t worry, there’s a selfish career element to it as well- your time with your mentee won’t go unnoticed, especially if he or she starts hitting milestones quickly. And you’ll (hopefully) be credited by upper management with helping that person get there. Nothing says promotion material more than: “able to selflessly help others.” As you can see, being a mentor has a ton of hidden benefits- including developing your leadership skills, making more money, and getting to feel like an overall good person. Feeling left out because your company doesn’t currently offer an official program? No stress, you can seek out your own mentorship opportunities by simply finding someone you’d like to work with- and offering your time to him or her. Or if you don’t have a person in mind, ask other managers if there’s someone on their teams they think could benefit from this relationship.

Post-graduation depression is a very real mental health issue

Post-graduation depression is a very real mental health issue Post-graduation depression is a very real mental health issue Graduating from college is  supposed  to be an exciting, happy time. Your whole future is ahead of you, and final exams are behind. For some grads, though, graduation isn’t all tossing caps up in the air accompanied by happiness. In fact, it can be the complete opposite - enter: post-graduation depression. What is post-graduate depressionWhile post-graduation depression isn’t an official diagnosis or mental illness like clinical depression is, it’s very much a real phenomenon. And I’ve got news for you, ’tis the season for post-graduation depression!“All of a sudden, you kind of realize you don’t have anything to do, you’ve just been laying in bed all day and saying that you’re going to look for jobs. I realized something was wrong when I was  looking for jobs  but not really trying hard,” college grad, Gina*, now 24, recalls of her experience with post-college depression. “I got into this mindset where I was thinking,  Ã¢€˜What makes me think that I’ll get thi s job over the million other creatives in New York City?’  I didn’t have any routine. Every day I was less and less motivated until I was watching full seasons of Netflix all day long. I was sleeping until 5 pm and up until 4 am  having panic attacks.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Sadly, Christina’s experience is far from uncommon.Graduating is a huge life changeLife transitions can be stressful  and triggering for anyone - even people who don’t have a pre-existing mental illness. Graduating from college and entering “the real world” is perhaps one of the most jarring life transitions a young adult can face.Rachel O’Neill, Ph.D., explains, “Change, in general, can bring about feelings of sadness. College graduation represents a major life transition and with that transition can come feelings of sadness or concern about the future. For many, graduating college can mean that multiple aspects of their life change relatively quickly (i.e., finding a new place to live, starting a new job, meeting new people). In essence, this becomes a bit of change-overload and it can be overwhelming for many individuals to navigate these additional stressors.”Graduating can also bring rejectionAnother unfortunate stressor?  Rejection. While a lucky bunch easily finds jobs soon after graduation, a lot of grads have to deal with rejection - and a lot of it. Getting rejected from job applications and interviews can take a serious toll on one’s self-esteem - and rejection is even more common in some industries than others (to the graduates who are fellow writers…hang in there!)Signs and Symptoms of Post-Graduate DepressionWhether a recent grad is coping with rejection and trying to get a job or navigating the struggles of their first “real” job that they’ve already landed, post-college depression has a few different ways it can manifest.†œIndividuals who are experiencing post-college sadness might notice that they feel sad or disconnected from their previous lifestyle as a college student; however, often they will be able to find joy in other areas of their life (for example, spending time with family or friends),” O’Neill says. “If an individual feels pretty sad and depressed and isn’t finding joy in other areas of their life, then it could be a  good opportunity to talk with a mental health professional.”Not finding enjoyment in things that used to bring you enjoyment is one of the many telltale signs of depression, and could be a sign that what you’re experiencing is more than just the blues. Talkspace therapist Cynthia Catchings, LCSW-S, warns, “Addiction or substance abuse is a common sign. Graduating college creates a void in our life. Therefore, we might turn to things or activities so to fill this void. It can be alcohol, cigarettes, or any other type of drug or activity.”Looking for another indicator to determine if your post-college blues could be headed towards  clinical depression? “Clinical depression is characterized by feelings of despondency and dejection that prevent us from completing our daily activities and interfere with work or relationships. The latter usually lasts longer and is more notorious,” Catchings says. So if you feel like you are really struggling day-to-day and having trouble doing even the most basic of things, it’s time to seek help from a mental health professional. How to Address Post-Graduate DepressionNo matter what level of sadness you’re experiencing, it’s important to really check in and take care of yourself. “Give yourself space to feel the emotions.  Mindfulness practices can be really helpful in identifying emotions without  judging them. Emotions are natural reactions to things that are going on in life,” O’Neill advises. “Instead of trying to escape the emotion, allow yourself to experience it while also thinking about how you can commit to focusing on your future. I also like incorporating extra self-care during times of heightened stress and sadness - things like daily affirmations or gratitude practices can be super helpful.”Catchings has some advice, too. “One of the tips that I recommend to recent graduates is to add structure to their lives. Try to go to bed or wake up around the same time every day and create a schedule that not only works for you but that also allows you to work on and reach your professional goals. Another tip is to make sure that you eat at least three meals a day around the same time. That helps us to stay healthy but also to prevent emotional eating or  eating disorders due to depression or anxiety.” If you want to be even more proactive, she suggests, “Create a dream board or a timeline. This will allow you to set daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals.”If you’ve recently graduated and started to feel this way - it’s okay. I promise you that y ou’re not alone. I bet if you open up to some of your close friends who are fellow graduates, you’ll learn that some of them feel the same way. Give yourself a big pat on the back for finishing college - it’s a huge accomplishment! As the pros said, allow yourself to feel all of the emotions and don’t forget to practice extra self care. Now, go out there and face adulthood, you’ve got this. This article originally appeared on Talkspace. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

10 days and 34 words to better relationships

10 days and 34 words to better relationships 10 days and 34 words to better relationships Think about it: unless you are a landscape painter, I’m pretty sure your work involves other people on a daily basis. They accomplish the parts of your work that you don’t have the hours or talent to tackle yourself, or they buy what you sell. Those other people (whether direct reports, peers, clients, or prospective clients) have choices regarding how they prioritize their days. Like you, they face multiple competing demands from multiple constituencies. So when you or I ask for a meeting, a favor, or their help on a task, they â€" quite frankly â€" have options. They can either help us today, or help us tomorrow. They can fulfill our request with positive energy, thoughtfulness, and creativity â€" or can simply cross “t’s” and dot “i’s” in a perfunctory way.How do you increase the odds that others do things well (and quickly) for you? Sometimes your job title or power grabs their attention initially â€" but more often than you’d like to think, the answer lies in ho w much they like and respect you. Do they enjoy being in a meeting with you? Do they learn from you, or are they bored by the tasks you request of them? Do you smile and bring a sense of humor to their day, or - instead - stress them out? Do you talk at them, or with them?Yes, this sounds old-school and you’ve heard it before â€" but it bears repeating: strong relationships are one of the main currencies on which you build a successful career or business - and the way you rally others to effectively Get Stuff Done for you.If you’re a leader who’d like to collect a bit more of this valuable “relationship currency,” here’s one path. Each day over the next 10 days, jot one of the 10 “relationship power phrases” below on a sticky note and post it where you’ll see it often. Then find as many occasions to put today’s power phrase to good use as you can, both at work and at home. (Keep a count if you’re competitive with yourself or motivated by games!)You might alr eady say these things, but consider saying them more or in different types of situations. As you practice and see the results in others’ faces and responses, you’ll build the muscle memory to keep using them over the longer haul.Successful leaders with loyal, talented troops who would walk across the coals for them pepper their speech (liberally) with these sentences. They sound so simple â€" but there is huge relationship power in these words: Tell me more. You’re right. I was wrong. What do you think? I agree. I love that idea. Thank you. Hey, I apologize. How can I support you? I believe you can do it. So grab a sticky note and enhance how you express caring, warmth, humility, and respect for others through these 34 words. You’ll likely get back more of those same four relationship goodies from them. Not to mention faster request turnaround times and more enthusiastic, thoughtful help.

But she cautioned that they are not doing enough to retain, promote and advance talent, even as they aim for a more representative workforce.“We actually need to diversify diversity,” Tamez said, “and we actually need to make diversity more inclusive.”
